18 months: It may be worth consulting a professional if your child is not saying any words or is using fewer than 15 words. Some parents also want strategies to support language development at home.2 years: A consultation is recommended if your child uses fewer than 50 words, does not yet combine two words (e.g., "still juice"), or seems to have difficulty understanding certain simple instructions.3 to 5 years: It is advisable to consult if your child is difficult to understand, has pronunciation difficulties, does not understand simple and complex instructions, produces very short, poorly constructed or imprecise sentences, or if concerns are raised by the daycare or school.Ages 6 and over: An assessment may be helpful if your child is experiencing difficulties with reading, writing, understanding instructions, language organization, or social interaction.Adolescent: A consultation may be considered if language, communication, reading or writing difficulties persist and have an impact on learning, social relationships or self-confidence.Adults: We offer services for atypical swallowing in adults. A consultation may be relevant in cases of tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, difficulties related to tongue posture or swallowing, or when follow-up is recommended by a dentist or orthodontist.
An assessment session includes a series of tests and observations to identify a child's strengths and challenges in communication and language. This allows for the creation of a personalized intervention plan. For younger children, the assessment may take the form of play and natural interactions to obtain a representative picture of their abilities in an age-appropriate context.
